inherit - Latin *in- "in" + PIE root *ghe- "empty, left behind"
The act of writing conveys the permanence of words and ideas.
How those words are joined together in a sentence ... and the sentences arranged in chapters ... and the chapters combined in a book ... reveals their writer's understanding of the world.
As subsequent readers, we are privileged to glimpse the wisdom and folly of those who have gone before us by reading the books they leave behind ... and to form our own understanding of the world which is revealed thru the books we value and collect.
It then becomes our opportunity to preserve something of that understanding and share it with others ... by passing our books along as a collection when we must.
We owe an unrepayable debt to those who write, read and collect books. For in doing so they pass along insights into their minds and thoughts as precious and personal gifts ... to what can be complete strangers ... in acts of intergenerational education. We treasure those gifts when they come to our library in the form of personal collections and do our best to keep the "collections" together and alive as perpetual conversations of sorts with the individuals and families who accumulated them.
If you have a personal collection of books that you value greatly ... whether many or few ... we would be glad to talk with you so that when they are finally "left behind" [as they must be], they will still be "kept together" [as they should be]. Thanks to and for the following patrons and collections [listed chronologically] who have provided us such a valuable inheritance.
